Hello guys, I'm kind of new here.

So yeah as per the thread title, I would just like to know and get advice from veterans if is it worth it to create a new minecraft server (not generic obviously) well that comes with unique features and customs stuffs. I'm still thinking of creating a server.

And also I would like to get advice on how would you maintain a new founded server? Will it be worth it creating a new server? What are the odds of it being a successful server?

Thanks guys, Im really open for criticisms and advices. Cheers!

Are you able to invest thousands? Then yes.

Do I really need to spend thousands?
If you want to get something high quality, yes. I'm not 100% on other stuff but for the website:
- $160 xenforo licenses
- $20-$80 for xenforo add-ons
- $80-$300 xenforo theme (if you want something actually unique and good, you're looking at these prices)
- $80-$250 tebex theme (same reason applies)
==
You're looking at probably max of $790 for website stuff. Obviously you can find the cheaper devs but you won't get anything unique or special. You'll most likely get the same design as nearly every minecraft website out there.

In terms of logo, these artists price differently but my friend who I send my clients to if they need a logo ranges from $50-$150. Could be more but she's told me $150 as her max.
==
Now you're looking at a max of $940. Then you still need builds, plugins, plugin developer(if you want custom), advertisements, manager(maybe)

You get the point now on investing into a server. Again you can cut corners but you probably won't make the most of your server... If you can't invest that much now, I suggest going for server stuff first then webstore (don't really need a theme, just so you can get income). After you get some money, then you can invest in things like a webstore and forums theme.

Budget way:
- logo
- builds (could buy someone's server and go from there)
- manager
- plugins (premium and free)
- advertising

Thank you, Kuchy, for a comprehensive reply. Income-wise? Would minecraft server could be a great "income" in some ways?

I've never ran a successful server mainly cause I gave up on it after the 2nd month xD. I'm more of a web design/development person.

I feel like it can be a form of income but don't make it as a primary way. For me web development is a secondary income as I keep this as a hobby. Primary I've yet to comit to as I'm doing job shadowing this summer to prepare for med school. Minecraft server can be an income source but don't solely depend on it.

Thank you. I'm just planning to make a minecraft server to support my studies, as I am a current Industrial Engineering student. But yeah, I'm also looking for a day-job irl. Thanks tho.

As a representative of a sales and online marketing brokerage, I can tell you that with the right tactics a Minecraft server could be your primary source of income. You would have to think much bigger than one server though, you would have to think a whole network/hub/community with investors, people wanting to advertise on your server, partnerships. You name it.

However, with the right tactics: everything is possible.

Starting a minecraft server is a good side project to do. For me it's fun and that's why I do it, but I hope to make money off of it, however that isn't the primary focus, basically I'm saying what Kuchy said, don't plan for it to be a primary source, but you could definitely get to that point if you work hard.

edit: don't mind my huge run on sentence.

I currently live in the Philippines to study in which the conversion of USD to our currency (PHP) is kind of a huge deal and "could" be a great source of income. But yeah, thanks for the boost tho. I've realized that minecraft server as a source could not be that stable income.

If you’re going into it only looking for profit then no. You have to enjoy making and running a server if you want it to succeed in the long run. If you go in strictly looking for fast and big profits it won’t last very long.

Monetisation is the difficult part - as others have said it will be really expensive so you need to keep it afloat somehow. EULA means that cosmetic sales will be the bulk of your revenue, but that's a very tough thing to get right and may not be sustainable at the start. Will you be able to keep the server running if there are only a few players? What makes your server unique to attract the players? How will you market it?

I don't think it's impossible to monetise a server but it's difficult. If you don't have a solid plan for that, be ready to lose some money. But if you can find a creative solution, it'll be loads of fun. :)
