Is starting a server even worth it nowadays?

So I've taken interest in starting a minecraft server. I played on many when I was a teenager, and had a few private ones with friends so I have an idea of plugins and such. Now I'm an adult with a fairly profitable stock portfolio and I'd like to funnel some of that income into some other business ventures. A minecraft server seems cool. Also, if anybody is curious about how to generate some easy income through options, I can also explain that.

So I'm pretty familiar with the components needed to build a successful server. Plugins, Builds, Art, Domain & Site, Hosting, Advertising is the gist of it.

It seems like the competition is really crazy though. Money isn't a problem, I could certain get really high quality stuff built and done. I'm just wondering if I'm capable of completing such a venture on my own, I would probably need to get others to help me. Money isn't an issue.

In terms of advertising, I figured youtubers and slots are the most effective options, I'm not really so hot on youtubers because players tend to leave when the Youtuber does from my experience and from what I've heard. The #5 Minecraft-mp slot however last month only went for $800, which seems like a steal, I remember back in the day they were going for a lot more.

I should also note that I am a Software Developer, so if I reviewed the spigot API I could code my own plugins. I toyed around it with it a bit as a teenager, but I now am way more familiar with Java so I think I would be way more successful at creating plugins.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Depends on how much you willing to invest into advertising, and how you're gonna deal with EULA. Currently, most big servers (MCPrisons, Arkham, OPLegends) rely on P2W things but they make profit. But according to rumors, EULA is gonna be getting enforced a little more and has already affected servers such as TheArchon so its a risk to take, but if you do it right you can make some good money.
I'm just not sure which gamemode is really the most effective. I've considered doing like some sort of spin on a normal gamemode, like GTA factions with guns and vehicles or something, I don't know. I can invest a lot into advertising. Buying a slot would probably be very effective

Definitely can't top hypixel however I am sure the market is still stable and can bring 1K-30K usd per month (could be more).

As long as you have a team, as well as yourself, who are willing to put the time in then it's definitely worth it in the long run.
One of the huge mistakes a lot of new servers make is not having a good team. You have to put the time in at the beginning to provide a server that's unique in it's own right, but also you have to maintain engagement.

I'm not one to say this saying I never personally got one, but youtubers seem like the main way to bring in players compared to server lists.
Definitely this, I would say if you are able to find a decent sized youtuber that wants to start up a survival server for his fan base, that will be a golden ticket for you.

Partnering with youtubers is one thing. If I were to just find a minecraft youtuber, and pay for some vids, they'd probably leave as the youtuber left the server. I suppose the bonus to this though is that more people can see the video over time whereas a slot is completely temporary

I've done both, minecraft slots are the way to go to build a long term player base.
