I'm starting a brand soon and want to know if this is legal or not, if I would need permission, etc.
Would doing something like this be allowed? If you can't tell by the picture its just an edit from the cover of JAWS

You'd probably get in trouble but don't take my word for it. If you're going to start a brand don't half-ass it, just get actual, original assets.

Yes, it's "illegal", however the chances of you getting in trouble is next to none. As long as you aren't a major company with lots of attention, they aren't going to care what you do with it. If you're just small with a small client base etc. you likely won't get any trouble.

Although if you ARE a big business. I'd strongly recommend just getting something original designed. It won't cost much and in the long term, it's worth it.

Well the thing is i've seen NELK who's made over a million dollars in merch sales and most of their merch is just skidded logos like the one I sent.

It all depends on the copyright legalities, maybe they purchased rights, maybe it's free. Just gotta research these things.

I googled "legality of parody shirts" and the replies from actual lawyers all seem to say the same thing: "Each fair-use case has to be decided individually."

It's not like you're just making bootleg shirts, you're making a parody shirt, which in many cases is protected under "fair use".
