Just curious about peoples opinions, had several friends recently make youtube channels and am just curious to see if it's actually viable and worth doing? Some are gaming, some are informative? Some are tutorial based? What's the best path? All asked me for growth advice and honestly, never had a channel over a few close friend subscribers.

TIA for any information.

Everyone is has the potential to be successful even some of the biggest influencers right now only started like 1-3 years ago. Just be good at what you do and stay consistent with it and results will show.

People were asking the same question five years ago, and many who started back then ended up seeing success. As long as you stay persistent, it will happen eventually.

In my personal opinion, it depends on the type of content you upload.
If you making Minecraft Let's Plays, you will see slow growth over a long period.
If you do MrBeast-style or Mark Rober-style videos that have a good storyline with good editing, you will see growth. It is evident that people want to see this type of content - just look at the like to view ratios!

Anything that gains money requires money or some type or payment, people who promise money for free are always lying. Payment may be in time etc in the end you would have been able to gain more if you put in more etc.

Exactly this. You have to spend money to make money.

I believe YouTube will be a career option for many years to come. As long as you remain unique, and have enjoyable content, on-top of staying persistent, you'll see results.

YT is a good source of income if you know how to create good content, and yes, you might need to invest money into your content, but it's worth it.

Just be careful with the rules, if your videos get taken down, demonetized, or you receive an unjustified copyright claim, then you're pretty much alone, as the only way of getting in touch with YouTube is via Twitter, and most of the time, they'll just ignore you.

It takes time and patience, but once you get the hang of it, then it can become a good source of income.

Exactly - Think some of them are willing to put money in and some aren't. They all released their first videos yesterday and the ones who paid $1 a day for a week are on 100ish views and the ones who didn't are at like 5 views. So there is definitely a gain. The only issue they're having is keeping people engaged.

Some of them are doing some odd things, Believe one is following gaming - one is doing a tech review - one is doing ASMR channel and I feel like the ASMR is struggling the most for engagement to keep it.

Agreed, as previously stated the ones investing even little amounts of money are seeing a positive increase compared to the ones who aren't.

This is quite interesting. I would like to see someone put in zero, $1 and $10/100 to test which channel has the best growth

You CAN grow your channel with little to no initial investment, you just need to have good and original content, or maybe just good content in general. Most of the big names today started with $0, and now they have enough money to survive and purchase god like setups.

Investing money to your YT channel is not always going to boost the channel growth, I would suggest investing on your setup, a good microphone, perhaps a good webcam too, etc. The best way to grow there is via connections, just like the business world, make connections and friends, collab, and you will see some growth.

Just remember, at the end of the day, it all depends on how good your content is.

Well, having a bigger pocket helps with the quality of the videos.

It's interesting tbf - the one paying £1 a day for a week is up to 140 and the other is at 6 views.

Some of the styles of content they're creating don't allow for collaboration. ASMR especially as there is no real content other than sounds to help people sleep.

true. However as stated, some video styles like the ASMR sounds can't really have quality XD Other than noises.

Realistically, I think that the main success behind almost every influencer is their personality. Anyone can play any game, and make fancy looking tutorials - but the person behind the video, and they way they express themselves are a majority of the reason people will subscribe.

The video could be amazing - but if the person narrating, or playing has zero personality, it turns me off.

Unless you can learn how to do stuff yourself. Relying on others to do the work for you only works until you loose a critical member of your team. Let alone, be able to generate enough money to keep a team afloat (unless you have money coming from elsewhere).

Totally agree to be fair. Some channels remove themselves from the picture though. It's just content etc.

Most good editing software costs money, effect packs cost money, etc etc. I am not saying you shouldn't rely on yourself and learn how the youtube algorithm works; editing videos etc. But in the end most if these stuff is going to cost money.

Fair enough, but hiring other people to do it for you will cost more in the long run. If you want to run a list channel, you are better off getting a $150 USB microphone and doing the commentary yourself than paying $100 a video for somebody to do it for you.

Coming back to this because I seen other people mentioning money and wanted to say that I highly recommend learning how to edit videos and making your own thumbnails (at least learning both or one of the two.) as it will help you in the long run. When I was doing YouTube I just took the time to teach myself, yeah it's a struggle at first but once you get the hang of it you won't have to worry about spending all that money for others to do it for you and it also makes a nice side job if it's something you like doing.
