Issue with MCM Account Names

Currently, users are unable to change their name to a name previously used by another member. An example of this is nobody can change their name to @Hang. Even though nobody is using the name, since it was used formerly, nobody can take the name. This helps users not think they are dealing with someone, while they're dealing with someone else. One weird thing, though, is new accounts are able to use these names. Who's to say a new member won't impersonate or pretend to be a user who formerly had the name?

An example of this is Nico2.

A few months ago I changed my name from @KingNdg to Nico2. I then changed my name to Nico. When I went to change my name back to Nico2, I realized I'm unable to. I thought this was weird as users can't take previously used names. Upon this realization, I contacted Doge who handles username changes. He asked Mick and Mick said the name must be request-able to be changed to. I am unable to request Nico2 as it has been active within the last 6 months; however, the user created the account and has not been active since 2 days after creation. I believe this is a mistake that people should be able to take names of former members.

Overall- my suggestion is to make it so new members are not capable of taking previously used names.

Agreed, if usernames can't be reused if you try to change to them, but can still be registered as a new account, the whole system is pointless.

People can easily claim names that people previously used on VPNs just so they can't claim them or even to attempt to impersonate.

He changed it thinking nobody could take it due to previously used names not being able to be changed to. If you can't change to previously used names, it doesn't make sense to be able to register them either.

Currently you can't take previous names. For example, I can't take @Asa right now, and neither can anyone else, but if someone creates an account they can make an account named Asa.

If you change your name, I think it makes the most sense for the name to be available again. Being able to change your name and keep all of your previous names just seems silly to me. If you want to keep your name, don't change it at all. At least then it would stop people from changing their names for money.

Have a cool down, so you have like 3 days extra to claim a name.

I think if the username goes along the lines of your old name you should be allowed to change it. For example if I wanted to change my name to "Sheepey" because my name is SheepeyDarkness and just wanted to shorten it up and I changed it... A month or two later I may want to change it back to SheepeyDarkness because after having "Sheepey" for awhile I noticed that people from other servers didn't recognize me. Same goes for names such as Nick and Nich(ck)olas. Just my idea.

I agree. I think that we should make it so that if you change your name, other people can change their name to yours.

Alright- then that’s a fair decision. Just make it so people either CAN or CANT, because there’s no consistency currently. Just clarifying- since Nico2 is inactive I can reclaim it in December ?

( Also because of impersonation I think it would be nice if there was a little tiny 2 ( that looked like the squared symbol ) right next to their name when you click on their profile to see if they're the second person who has had that name.
