Issue with MCM Account Names

Currently, users are unable to change their name to a name previously used by another member. An example of this is nobody can change their name to @Hang. Even though nobody is using the name, since it was used formerly, nobody can take the name. This helps users not think they are dealing with someone, while they're dealing with someone else. One weird thing, though, is new accounts are able to use these names. Who's to say a new member won't impersonate or pretend to be a user who formerly had the name?

An example of this is Nico2.

A few months ago I changed my name from @KingNdg to Nico2. I then changed my name to Nico. When I went to change my name back to Nico2, I realized I'm unable to. I thought this was weird as users can't take previously used names. Upon this realization, I contacted Doge who handles username changes. He asked Mick and Mick said the name must be request-able to be changed to. I am unable to request Nico2 as it has been active within the last 6 months; however, the user created the account and has not been active since 2 days after creation. I believe this is a mistake that people should be able to take names of former members.

Overall- my suggestion is to make it so new members are not capable of taking previously used names.

I think that as it is it's still too lenient. I don't think we'll be reducing it any time soon.

This system can be exploited, what you will have is Premium users changing their names all the time and thus making the previous names no longer available. For example one could change his name every 30days to a irl name. Eventually this user's previous name list would be full of irl names and no one can take those, rendering them usless and in the void. This concept I find unfair, so as a counter suggestion Users should be given the ability to create a one time main name and every 30 days have the ability to use a different alias. These aliases can be taken but the orginal one time name can't. The user can then via his profile conceal his "main name" with the alias which is changeable every 30 days or choose to use his main name.

We have since changed this system so that after you change your name there is a cooldown period before that name can be used again in the future, just as this suggestion suggested.
