If you are looking for an IDE (Integrated Development Environment), then IntelliJ IDEA is your best bet. While there are some alternatives (Eclipse, NetBeans, BlueJ), they aren't nearly as powerful as IntelliJ.

Eclipse is more lightweight than IntelliJ in my opinion. All gets the job done though.

I honestly suggest IntelliJ, Jetbrains is in my opinion the company that just makes IDEs the best

IntelliJ is a program I've used for almost my entire time making things with Java, I started with eclipse because that's what I followed but quickly learned that IntelliJ existed and I understood IntelliJ way quicker than I ever did eclipse.

People might argue 'but eclipse is more lightweight!!' well try disabling 90% of the pre-installed plugins on IntelliJ it really boosts the IDE's speed and you more than likely will never even touch most of them.

try each of the IDEs out and see which one you feel more comfortable coding java in. Every one of us will have personal recommendations based on our user experiences or what we are used to just using. some IDEs will have more features than others and depending on what type of java coding your doing would determine which IDE is best for your situation.

Most prefer IntelliJ as it has more capability than eclipse. I learnt on eclipse and it took a long while for me to try out JetBrains but definitely glad I did.

Eclipse is more user friendly in my opinion, it took me ages to figure out where everything is in IntelliJ but most things are documented online so if you get stuck you can search on the internet.

I started with NetBeans when I followed the Java tutorials. Then when I started making Minecraft plugins I switched to Eclipse and finally, I switched to IntelliJ.

The one thing I like about Eclipse is you can use a program called Saros so if you ever want to code with friends, you can use it to code in real time.

Overall it's just personal preference, I think that both Eclipse and IntelliJ good IDE's and you should try them both out rather than having people tell you which one to use.
