Purple and yellow are an example of complementary colors; they're directly opposite to each other, and create a lot of contrast and stability. Maybe this is what gives you the (false) idea that they don't work together?
You can find pretty good examples of these two colors working together in nature:
I think they work rather well: The text is very easy to read because of the contrast created, and basically screams "READ ME!".
