The last few months I’m selling and buying btc on mcm and a lot of times people add me on discord and say “you’re in need of btc right?” Then I say yes. And then they want me to go first because he is a “reputable” member on Mcm. Today 3 people tried this and I asked them sent me a Pm on mcm and put their discord name in their to confirm But then they are like “i’m out rn with friends and it costs to much mobile data” and then i’m like don’t ***** try to scam me so I thought maybe it would be nice to make a topic called “known scammers” so you can put their discord or Skype in their that you do not need to deal with those people. It would save everyone a lot of time.

I believe I'm a known Satan :p

Anyhow, I think a dedicated thread or forum to a list of known scammers is great, since using the search bar to find banned members is quite slow and tedious then CTRL+F on a page as well as finding previous scam reports.

The point of this thread is to put up discord ids/discriminators and skype usernames of impostors.

Creating a list of known scammers isn't an ideal way to handle it for several reasons in my opinion. Some are:
  • A list isn't an efficient way of stopping impersonation. If someone is impersonating me with the skype name 'mick.official' or something like that and that name gets added to the list, they'll just make a new one. Sure, it might add about 20 seconds on to the time it takes them to scam but that's less time than it would take to report and moderate anyways.
  • A list lulls people into a false sense of security. Rather than asking someone to confirm that they are who they say they are, someone may just check the list and if the impostors and if the account isn't there assume that the impostor isn't an impostor because they haven't been reported yet.
  • No one would actually use it. The kind of person who would check an impostor list is also the same person who would ask for a PM to confirm who they say they are. A majority of the people who are scammed by impersonators are people who don't even know what an impersonator is.
For these reasons I feel that this is not an adequate way to prevent impersonators. Realistically, the only way to reduce scams like this is to raise awareness for new users, so if anyones got ideas of how to do that I'd love to hear them.

I know that on other forum copycats people use these lists.

A list isn't an efficient way of stopping impersonation
The list isn't to stop impersonations but rather promote awareness of known scammers and also to make the scammer make new accounts which delays their time in being able to scam. We want to make it difficult for them to scam and if they can't scam a user within 5-10 minutes because they got caught and need to make a new account I would think they'd stop trying to scam and move on.

A list lulls people into a false sense of security
That'll be the scam list viewer's fault for not using other ways to get the scammer to verify their identity.

I agree but is there maybe a chance people can’t see a part of the forum in my case cryptocurrencies because all these people that send me a message don’t have mcm

If someone wants to do a deal with you and they don't have a MC-Market account I already think that's pretty suspicious. Tell them to sign up to confirm their identity with you first so that if they're ban evading or something like that they can at least be caught. I've never really done a deal with someone who doesn't have a MCM account and I don't think it's a common enough reason by itself to create an impersonator list.
