I've had around 6K once (never thought to take a screen though), cause I was away for a long time.
However, most groups that give me more than 1K messages per day get put on /alertsoff

Mine are quite small. When I used to play Tribal Wars and participate in tribe skype groups I would usually find 500-2k+ messages per day.

I normally have around 1k-5k unread when I get online when I get home. Max ever... 50k. It was a spam chat lol

At one point I was added to three staff chats, big ones at that. 40+ very active members per group, ended up with about 28k from the three chats one morning.

As for spam-add groups, average somewhere between 1-5k before I leave generally.
Highest I've ever had was from a Group Chat with 3 people using spambots, exceeded about 60k and then I left it. Was online at the time just had notifications off, it was certainly odd to tab into.
