Hello,

I am learning system administration (starting with the centos operating system) and was wondering what goals would be good for me to set myself to begin with.

For example being able to install a panel / secure the server (since I can already set it up to host websites).

Thanks,
Sean

you learn with experience, there's not really too much to it. Seeing you are a CEO of a company, that probably doesn't legally exist, I say just get a vps and mess around with it...[DOUBLEPOST=1529005815][/DOUBLEPOST]it also requires alot of critical thinking skills and analytical skills
Thanks for that, I was just interested to see what paths other people may have taken since I would mainly be interested for personal reasons.

Also, we are a legally registered company as can be seen here.

Frank said it. Although I agree with him for the MC sector of system administration (MC SysAdministration is extremely shallow, not much to it), but beyond the MC barrier, tutorials, communities, more experienced admins, and practice in a controlled environment is extremely important, you couldn't become a pro sysadmin by barely just experience. On my side of things that's what I do. I constantly practice, learn new things, and improve. And when I feel that I master my latest interests, I hangout in sysadmin communities and participate in help requests and questions, and pick up the vocabulary I don't know about or concepts I need to master later on.

I will make this post to go beyond the extremely shallow sector of "Backwater MC SysAdmining"

First thing is first: Learn the intricate details of the hardware you are working on. Ram Timings, L3 Cache, what cpu to use over another CPU. For Example: A higher clocked lower core iX series would be better for game server than a Xeon EX series.

You need to learn the OSI model. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model

https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-linux-linuxfoundationx-lfs101x-1 < Take this course.

You will need to learn the intricate details of Networking such as Routing, VLans, Mutlicasting, BGP, and so forth.

Get certified. CompTIA A+ is a good place to start.

I could go on and on but this makes a good start. As you play around with these things, you will end up in a rabbit hole of stuff which you can continue down to continue your education.

Thanks, I will work up to earning qualifications. I might be getting the CompTIA A+ at sixth form if that is the specialism I choose but we will see. Thanks again.
