I've seen big servers that sell in game currency, one specifically that I remembered from kinda recently, doesn't do it anymore (just checked), but just to be safe you probably shouldn't.

The EULA does not apply anymore due to Microsoft purchasing Mojang, nothing will happen if you break them. (Tag on a "This server is not affiliated with Mojang") just to be safe.

They will send a swat team and make sure you are jailed for at least 10 years. But seriuosly, they couldn't care less if a tiny little server is breaking the rules. You're safe.

Thx for letting me know! Are you sure that when Microsoft bought MC it means that the EULA doesn't still apply?

Microsoft's EULA would apply towards the game, not Mojang's. If they adopted it, that's different. You would have to look into that and if you are interested I would recommend calling Microsoft about it. Anyways, Microsoft isn't losing any money by letting you have a server. They are more interested in story mode and all that.

But if Microsoft bought Mojang, doesn't it mean the EULA still applies?

This is not true. Microsoft purchased the shares (and thus ownership), yes, but mojang as a company still exists, and therefore so does the EULA.

The current version of the EULA states that selling ingame currency is forbidden. However, you can sell tokens and stuff for cosmetic purposes. That's what they emphasize.
What I recommend is that you model your payment systems after the biggest networks such as mineplex and hypixel. They're big enough for Mojang to concern themselves with if they break any terms, so you can safely assume a system that they use is allowed.

All in all, I recommend reading the EULA as listed on the Mojang website, as well as the FAQ for it. Its not worded in any difficult legal terms, so you'll be able to understand easily.

Servers like the Archon and Cosmic make more per business year than Hypixel and/or Mineplex do. Mojang honestly doesn't care.

If you're still worried, I'd suggest making your premium a soft currency by allowing any user to get 1 unit very rarely! So techniquely any user can get the same amount of currency that paid customers can, even if it means grinding for 200+ years..

Hypixel breaks the EULA and they're fine.
I don't think they quite break it, they're bending it all over the place though.
I think as long as your server isn't obviously pay2win, mojang couldn't care less as others have said.

Haha, that's technically correct.
My concern is that in my server players could cash out their coins into real money.

Mineplex, yes.
Hypixel, no.
Hypixel has enough to support a team of 40 employees, paying $14/hour.
As well as their massive amount of machines, they recently bought some expensive hardware for their boxes for mitigation (I don't know the exact price).

Servers like you mentioned are all large, however the scale of their network is in no way near the size of one like Hypixel's.
Running 20 boxes is completely different to like Hypixel running >300.
Let alone all of this costs a lot more than the servers you posted.

Profit wise, maybe yes. Income wise, no.
