The refresh rate for private conversation is a bit outrageous.
Most of my activity is spent in the premium shoutbox, why? Because it's instant.
I can actually converse with people.
And if I or other members want to take something to "pm"... The only sensible use of MCM's messaging system is to tell each other your skype, and message there, because here it's useless.
Not only is there a limit on how many messages you can send to that user before they reply, but sometimes it takes so long to be read and receive a reply, that you'll end up having two conversations at the same time with the same person, rarely ever being on "the same page" if you will.
Your only option is to sit there and refresh the page constantly for five minutes, or wait to get the email a year later that someone responded to your message, respond, and repeat the process.
Put simply: It's nearly impossible to progress a conversation within what one would consider a reasonable time frame.
There are plenty of pre-made extensions for messaging systems:
e.g https://xenforo.com/community/resources/wmtech-realtime-chat-conversations.4047/ (just an example, I'm sure there are better)
Though I would love to see something similar to a private shoutbox, that I can just pull up for another user.
