Just because I have nothing better to post about, why not post your longest uptime?

Before you ask, I don't turn off my computer because I don't have a real reason to. Just got into the habit of locking my computer rather than shutting it down, stuck with it since. I roughly average a reboot once every week to biweekly. This uptime is a considerable outlier though. I consider it pretty good coming from Windows 10 Pro (Historically I've had stability issues past 2 weeks)

Rules:

It MUST be the computer you use daily (or considered daily driver);
1. It cannot be a server or something like a raspberry pi
2. It cannot be any form of virtual machine

I'll start off with a relatively tame 21 days, 10 hours, 42 minutes, 30 seconds uptime. (And counting)

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

I had 28 days about a month ago. Power went out so it finally reset itself. That was running near 100 Chrome tabs, 3 IDEs (IntelliJ, CLion, and PyCharm), and 3 instances of Minecraft for nearly the whole duration of it. Currently sitting on 4 1/2 days :(

ah, yeah, mine runs a few games from time to time, a fuckton of browser windows & tabs idk how many specifically but here's what task manager shows - not sure why you'd run 3 minecraft instances, but ok.

The one is a real machine

It cannot be a server or virtual machine, but still regardless it doesn't matter. It's nice, my server has 36 day uptime but that's because I was forced to do a reboot. Otherwise it would've been closer to 180 days

Lost the screenshot, will have to find it again at some point but last year sometime I had my laptop going for 34 days.
Reason being is I use the sleep function habitually and rarely shutdown.
At that point though, Windows was ridiculously slow and unstable. I do not recommend it, restart your computer at least once a week lol.

Yea, windows seriously doesn't like staying online all the time...sucks big time.

Surprisingly my computer remains stable despite coming up on one month, wonder if I can keep it online for a year with deferred updates and the sort.

Side note, why the pfp? I thought mcm was rated e for everyone...

Yeah it really doesn't. Though older versions of Windows and I think even Windows Server, might cope a little better.
Windows is so bloated - they re-use their old codebase (you can still find remnants of code from Windows 3.1 iirc). I digress. Long uptime = better to use Linux I guess.

You might be able to get lucky. My laptop doesn't have the highest specs and I suspect if I try and pull that again I might cause an ssd failure. My last one failed with over 2,000 hours of it in a mere 2 years.

Also I love this profile pic, it's very ...me. I wouldn't go so far as to call it inappropriate though ;).

Interesting. I stay away from windows management because of the needlessly complex and unintuitive way it's designed (some people may disagree, but I find it much more intuitive and much more simplistic on linux machines in terms of management) - or maybe its just because I like the idea of everything existing as a file in some form or another on the machine. Whatever though, people have their own opinions...

Nope. I can't remember if I kept my laptop online all the time when I had a laptop, but my computer is very high spec'd. RTX 3090 w/Ryzen 7 3700x (soon to be Ryzen 9 5950x)...

Can't say how long the longest drive I had with power-on hours. Here's mine for context...
(11,782 hours and counting)

Just kidding. Good for you though.

Yeah when it comes to diving into the administrative side of Windows, I have to agree. It's just gross. But at the same time I don't know nearly enough about Linux to compare it to, haha.

Holy moly. Yeah. Windows vs good specs, I think Windows would win if it came down to turning your computer into a sloth lol.

Biggest issue with windows I'd have to say is it's horrible logging (event viewer) vs dmesg (kernel logs), absolutely horrendous registry hive (I cannot stand the windows registry, it's fundamentally flawed, but I digress)

There's a few good things about windows though. Active directory is nice. You can use it with Linux machines but that's a disaster. Ferguson uses it, and I hate it. I'm not sure why, but rather take a 12 gauge shotgun to the mouth personally.

Yea, I couldn't imagine using windows with a regular platter drive; wish microsoft would migrate fully over to the Linux kernel. a lot of the problems windows experiences is just core problems with the operating system itself, at least in comparison with Linux systems.

If it wasn't for the compatibility issues Linux presents, I would definitely have moved over to Fedora/RHEL based distros or Debian based distros long ago. It's come a long way though, might revisit it later this year.

Sorry what was that? I couldn't hear you over my computer freezing trying to load the event viewer Kappa.
Event viewer is probably the worst, poorly optimised and organised program and the system behind it is awful.

Fair enough lmao.

One can dream ahaha, I think the day Microsoft moves over to the Linux kernel is the day it goes freeware. Which, considering Windows 10 is basically free with most pre-builts and upgrades from old operating systems...

yep, not to mention this legendary excerpt from the real world:

windonks in all of its glory here.

I think the days of microsoft actually *actively* pursuing charging for operating systems is most definitely over. It's just not something that's viable anymore, they have much more profit with server enviroments and enterprise divisions than they will ever get with the consumer grade software they provide. It would only make sense for microsoft to eventually transition into some form of a Linux Kernel, even if it's hybrid. WSL is a good start, and it's promising to see that it's capable of translating linux syscalls to windows syscalls, relatively easily too. Course, i'm not a developer, and I only know about the linux kernel - but, 5 years ago, 6 years ago - this was deemed impossible.
