I recommend changing the thread prefix to "Requesting" rather than "Offering". ;)

It depends on the machine you have and if you want to make a profit!

Summary: Depends what you're looking for. Cost does not equal value of product. Be careful of scams or hosts that shut down a month after opening (there are an unfortunate number of these).

You'll need to take more than price into account to determine whether you're getting a good value. Things to look at are hardware specs, features offered, support system (how fast are the responses and what is the quality of the responses), uptime, location, etc. You also may want to look at how long the service has been running. There are more hosts starting and failing every single day than I can count. Not saying you should instantly rule out any new hosts, but going with a new host certainly increases your chances of waking up to the host gone along with your data. Anything under $1.50/GB is unsustainable. You'll almost always be placed on crappy hardware (and a crappy network), on an overloaded server, or both. So I'd recommend sticking to hosts that are $1.50/GB and up. Though to be clear, for $1.50/GB you shouldn't be expecting much. The host should be paying taxes and other fees, not to mention as they scale they'll need to pay additional staff, etc. Unfortunately lots of hosts around the $1.50/GB mark are not paying taxes and paying their staff less than minimum wage. What you'll see some hosts do that offer around the $1.50-$2.50/GB range is offer additional services and/or a premium line that offset the unsustainable or at least barely profitable $1.50-$2.50/GB line.

Ask for a price for him to host servers at, you guys just copy and paste your templates. Jesus, read the post at least a little. This one applies to 'Titan Nodes', maybe put a little effort by putting the person name in your reply? Just a thought. (Not trying to attack you, but after working in the hosting industry, this is just to damn common and bugs me when I see it.)

Typically, nowadays hosts go for around $2/GB, but it all depends on your support, uptime, etc. I'd be willing to pay $5/GB if I was getting better support, uptime, and more. So in reality, if you're just providing normal support nothing above the ordinary and want to make a profit, it's better to go around $2/GB. If you're gonna be going above and beyond the normal support, and the quality of servers, you could easily go to $5/GB.

Sadly though, due to bigger hosts that have been in the game longer, it will be harder to get clients at the $5/GB range unlike before.

If I can show you a recording of me typing all of that over and over, I didn't really copy and paste my posts.
Before I type, I read the OP's post back and forth and making sure I cover the topic and what correct information.
I agree with you about hosts copying and pasting their conversations, It's just I use a template in my head.
[Greet them]
[Cover any discounts/deals from what OP wants]
[Hardware of the machine]
["Feel free to contact us"]
I mean how specific I can go from there? Although I'll keep your suggestion in mind.

You put the effort in, awesome! That's what I love to hear, and thank you for a proper response. Understandable, but he was looking for a pricing point for him to sell servers at :p It took me a while to understand what was going on, so as I said, not trying to attack you. But it is awesome to hear that you put effort into your posts, and gave me a proper response.

Hello, I would just like to point out everything I typed was not a template and actually typed to fit the clients needs. I also did say his name as I do care to read through the post and the replies.

Thank you,

Rather than plugging ourselves, let me actually answer the question in detail.

First things first, let's break down the costs of maintaining a hosting company.
  • Hardware: Most profitable/established hosting companies use 64GB RAM nodes and up. Looking at the most common provider around, SoYouStart, (a subsidiary of OVH) a node with such specs would cost you $58 USD pre-tax. (TAX depends on the company's location ofc) That would come in at just over $0.90 USD/GB.
  • Software: Let's pretend that our imaginary company is using the most common combo around here, WHMCS & Multicraft. Multicraft would run you $0.44 per Server (100 server license). With roughly two years of hosting experience, I'd say that most people opt for about 2GB's of RAM. (this may vary a LOT) That will make our per GB price $0.22 USD/GB for Multicraft and $16 USD for a branded WHMCS license
  • Extras: Every company has a different expenses on top of the above-mentioned ones. It could be anything really. Live chat, VPS's, etc.. Let's pretend that our imaginary company doesn't have any of these tho.
  • Tax: In the UK, under 81000 pounds of revenue, you only need to pay 19% from your total profits.
On top of all those, ideally, you'd still have to pay for staff.
With that in mind, creating a company with a price range of $1-1.25 per GB sustainably, with profit, is impossible. The host would have to close down in a few months or oversell.

I'd personally recommend the $2.00 USD and up price range.

Kind Regards,
Balázs
