And if you don't get income, you just expect people to be ok about them wasting their time (and possibly lending out hardware for free)?

You need an investement or have some funds for something like this, not expect people to work for free with the hopes that someday they will get paid.

Just a tip: Don't start anything like this without money. Get at least a couple thousands saved. You don't have to use everything, but have it available. Without any money, you'll have a really hard time and will almost certainly fail.
