If you are wanting to build your portfolio, and have no previous work, why would we pay for it, when there are others doing what you're doing - for free...

Just because I don't have previous work, doesn't mean the product is bad. I'm not going to spend multiple hours building a backend for a website with no return - I doubt anyone is offering backend web for free.

I don't think you are looking at this correctly.
When you want to build a portfolio for a paid service, the community expects you to do at least some small projects for free.
If you have no portfolio and already want to be paid for your services, why would anyone buy from you? They have absolutely no idea what your capabilities are, as you give little to explanation of your specific experience.
Along with this, they have nothing to view the quality of your work from.
