Very little because I started to understand it quickly and just learned to read documentation. For someone new though it's a pretty good start.

Learn the language first and then the api.

Best way is to buy a textbook for starters to intermediate. Read the entire thing and practice.

Then start learning the spigot api using either the Spigot docs, watching youtube videos or going through source code of other plugins to understand how they work.

once you learn the basics of java, start with simple spigot stuff like creating commands, using listeners, using config etc..

you will eventually get to the point where you can read the spigot docs and create stuff without needing a tutorial.

java programming is easy, just requires time and patience to learn
