It is a big pain having to worry about the BB code in my advertisement taking up the character limit in the shout box.
My advertisement BB code looks like this:
[*COLOR=gold][*I]Banners and signatures[*/I] »[*URL=mc-market.org/threads/285024/ ][*COLOR=red]Click Here![*/COLOR][*/URL]« Limited time [*B]99% OFF[*/B] flash sale! [*I]Prices starting at $0.10![*/I][*/COLOR]

(the *s are to make it not convert to stylized text)

the character count of my message is 198
but in reality, the number of characters people see is only 95
Banners and signatures »Click Here!« Limited time 99% OFF flash sale! Prices starting at $0.10!

I would love if it automatically removed any BB code from the character count so that I can do all of the formatting I want without having to worry about running out of room for my actual advertisement.

I assume the character limit it to prevent spamminess. and BB code is invisible to everyone so I do not see why it is included.

Nah, this way people can Advertise with style and Uniqueness, (if that's a word) So leaving it will let people stay themselves and advertise how they want, and if someone tries to play around with it / abuse it temp kick from chatbox..
Please reread the post
I am not asking to remove bb code
I want it to not be part of char count so that i can have more stylization in my messages

The BBCode format is currently detected after you've completed your message and commit to sending it.
In order to not count BBCode in shoutbox messages, we'd have to detect for it AS you're typing it, and then the remaining characters would constantly be jumping around as BBCode is completed and then detected and negated from the character count.
For instance, you hit the character count before you can close a bold BBCode, so you go back in your message and delete a letter, then close the BBCode, then suddenly you have 12 more characters, and can add that letter back. Though it would not appear as if anything has changed.
It's just not intuitive at all; and I really want for this site's functionality to be intuitive wherever possible.

I'm also not entirely certain there won't be performance concerns arising with detecting for BBCode for every member every time they type a single letter in shoutbox.
This would also require customization of our chat addon, which means we would not be able to update it when the addon updates, without redeveloping those changes for that newer version.

Im sure it would be hard to implement. But i dont know much about that stuff, so other people can debate that.

As for intuitiveness, i think that using bb code is not realy meant to be an intuitive thing and people dont expect it to be when they mess around with it in the shoutbox.

I'm all for upping the character count by another 50 as an alternative .
The 200 character limit currently results in a full message taking up a few characters on the third line, and the rest of that third line is wasted. Most people don't message to the limit, so there's little harm in filling up the rest of that third line, at the very least.
50 extra characters aught to relieve a lot of the pressure from the BBCode, seeing as you're already managing to fit it into 200 characters.

At first I thought, well what if you just detected the bbcode after but that would get messy. So in reality I actually agree that adding 50 or so to the chatbox would be great.

I'd like more feedback on upping the chat message character limit from 200 to 250.

Bump.

Never made an advertisement but it seems pretty legit.

Personally I also feel like the tradeoff between making a flashy/fancy/BBCode-ish ad and a long and detailed ad is a good compromise that users have to decide between.

Denied, thanks for the suggestion.
