*Please correct me if this is already a feature*

Following someone is pretty pointless on this forum. I think there should be a system where when you follow someone... when they post a thread/message, it is shown in the follower's alert box

I don't know about an alert box, but maybe more like a feed for who your following?
This would be neat! Great idea.

I definitely do like this suggestion and I'd love to see it implemented, but one thing I would change is to make it opt-in so my feed doesn't get spammed by the people I follow.

I’d immediately disable if that were the case. I’d be getting dozens of notifications that probably don’t pertain to me.

No worries, haha.

i like that link but personally it needs to look nicer, more like an instagram feed than just a list lol,
It's not supposed to replicate the feel of Instagram or Instagram-style following. As it states on the page, it is just a news feed - or a stream of activity in various places by people you follow. Most posts and reactions are contextualised to a particular thread or profile, anyway, and will require a click regardless of how you format the feed.
Take this for example - https://ally.ws/i/6fAavEtARK3rwxUS.png - even taking out the reactions, I don't particularly see the use of having an Instagram-style feed when the posts are in completely different places with completely different contexts.

People mostly follow for the sake of following either way, which is totally okay with me; I don't like the idea of people following me for the sole purpose of stalking my activity. Maybe on Instagram, where I'm intentionally making posts for the general public to see, not just people in a thread. I also don't think getting alerts for people you're following would be a good idea either, for the exact same reason(s).

yeah but it shows one person at a time. Personally I recommend it showing previews and randomizing it. This way we don't only see 1 person at a time

But that would defeat the point of having a news feed... in chronological order. It doesn't only show one person at a time, I'm not sure what you mean by that?

I meant it shows 1 person's posts, then the next person rather than randomizing them. It would be cool a new feature but idk

It shows who's ever active at a given time, in chronological order, not per-person. It's typically because people do things in bulk at once than spread out when other people are doing it.
Randomising posts and whatnot makes no sense, especially with the reasons I gave above - how about consequential replies, for example?
