So I would say I'm pretty into mechanical keyboards, owning 7 myself; Each of them are custom and lubed and have their own keycap set and what not. I very much enjoy making them and I think typing on a lubed keyboard feels almost as good as going from a membrane to a mech.

Are there people in this market interested enough to buy relatively premium keyboards with prices ranging from like $300-$800? Just want to know.

I’ve actually been planning to build one since last year for my birthday, but I decided to delay it for Christmas. January’s ending and I still haven’t gotten to buying parts for a new MK, though I have some ideal parts: jade or navy blues, 9009 keycaps, a high profile silver or white case, and a hotswap pcb.

Does lubing affect the sound or just the smoothness of it? I currently have a MK w/ cherry blues and I love the super clicky sound and feel so I’m 50/50 on lubing my hypothetical future board.

Also, got pics? I’m a sucker for aesthetics c:

So I actually lube mainly for the sound rather than the feel (I know) and it basically makes stock stabs for mods sound like a normal keys and its great. If you have a clicky keyboard, I would just lube the stabs and be done because lubing the switch itself doesn't do much for you.

I don't have pics, and I don't want to take any currently since my desk is a mess but there's all sorts of stupid shit that I bought like rose gold kyuu case with creams and all that.[DOUBLEPOST=1579843247][/DOUBLEPOST]

To be honest there are better things to spend money on then purchasing multiple keyboards between $300-$800. People who do that could be a plot of an episode on "My Strange Addictions".

You could say that for literally any luxury; mechanical keyboards are similar to watches in that sense

I never knew building mechanical keyboards was a big thing - and it definitely sounds awesome! If you're willing to, I'd like to see where your keyboard build adventures go, and if it was worth it in the long run.

But nope, I'd never go with anything > $300. I'd rather spend that on upgrading other factors of my PC, being performance and aesthetics.

I don't think I'll be building my own. I'm happy with what's on the market - I always go to the good old MX Blues, they feel awesome and are pretty indestructible. I wouldn't use anything that's not manufactured by Cherry as they've never failed me, after owning 3 mechanical keyboards, with the switches being MX Blue -> MX Brown -> MX Blue. Call me a fan if you want. :p

Yea for sure!

As I said before; the switch to custom is quite like having your first mechanical keyboard and it is an experience. You should try some lubed switches in the future!

I've never heard of those. How much are they an improvement over MX Blues? Currently I'm so satisfied with the switches that I couldn't ask for anything better, however, if it's going to one-up my keyboard then I'm very interested.

So in my humble opinion, KaiHua Box Whites are just the superior clicky switch with both sound and feel improvements. It's much lighter and it's a much more bearable sound. If you need more suggestions as to where to buy a keyboard with one of these, LMK[DOUBLEPOST=1580338002][/DOUBLEPOST]

As for someone who has a custom built, I personally see a big difference, however I don't think mc-market has a lot of people that put 300-800 in a keyboard, but that's just me.

Fun hobby; I do it myself. However, It is extremely hard to become profitable in the business scene.

Yes, my bad.

Just from my experience the two keyboards I built cost around ~300-500 each. Very hard for to sell them at 500-700 to make a profit. I think it’s doable in a larger scene but not in the mc-market scene.
