Messages in top right confusion

how do they get messages in top right, its un-modded and has a resource pack.
leave any ideas below please

*im not requesting a plugin, just ideas about how they do it

I could be wrong but perhaps it is a scoreboard? Maybe the custom texture make the scoreboard not appear in places but there and they have a plugin that just reads what happened and then displays it there instead of the chat
