BACK IN MY DAY people would just get the name as soon as it released but now there seems to be some kind of new (and unfair) way to snipe og names by blocking the account name until a specific time. when did that start? and how do people do it? (not looking for someone to show me im just curious as to the steps people take)

1. The first sniper with pretty consistent wins was made in May 2015 (literally 3 months after name change day)

2. In November 2017, Mojang added a captcha to the mojang.com login and name change page. This meant that a captcha was needed for the normal way of sniping. So the new way was used, “blocking”.

3. “Blocking” is no more “unfair” than the old way of sniping. Handsniping has had a less than 1% success rate since 2015. Block sniping is nothing special.

4. Block sniping involves having many blank mojang.com accounts continuously authenticated with 2captcha. At the drop time, the “block” requests are sent out for the desired name. This exists for purchasing minecraft. For example: if you enter an invalid giftcode, you can block any available name. It uses the “block request”. This is because the original intent for this request was to “reserve” the name for someone purchasing minecraft, so the name is reserved, their payment clears, the account gets created with the desired name. However, all you have to do is send a request to this URL and the name will be blocked for 24 hours by default. That is what snipers do.

TL;DR the level of “unfairness” has been the same for nearly 5 years now. Ever since then, there has been a sniper or snipers which are automated and get 99.9% of the names because automation is faster than humans.
