Hi there! So I'm currently researching how minecraft calculates damage. I looked at the wiki and found the equation. The equation for finding damage is as followed:

I find this equation confusing because it has commas along with min and max variables that I have no clue if they are constants or there is another equation to find those values.

Upon looking through the wiki, I found a chart with the final damage values after taking into account armor points. I read that diamond armor gives a 80% damage reduction with 20 armor points. However, looking at the chart, the value it gives at 20 armor points and 20 damage is 12 rather than 4 which is the 80% damage reduction of 20 damage. I am thoroughly confused now. If anyone could shed some light on how exactly armor works in mc or how to use the equation accurately, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Read up on toughness. It's in the wiki too, that's what makes the 80%. In the table they didn't add toughness so the max is 40% and that comes down to the 12.

That helps a lot :) what about the equation? Do you know how to do it? Specifically the comma part along with the min max variables
