minecraft freezes when i change the tab

hi my minecraft freezes when i change the tab, i still hear sounds and stuff and i can press esc for example and i'd see my mouse meaning it would be in the options menu however on the screen is what was before i tabbed out of it and it wont change; how can i fix it so it wont happen again? closing the game then re-entering is pretty frustrating for something so small
