I‘ve been, extremely back and fourth on if I want to make a Minecraft server nowadays in 2023. I was thinking a factions network, considering I played factions awhile back from like 2013 - 2020. I owned two full scale networks and making a Minecraft factions server would not take too much for my time. I was just thinking if it’s worth it or not? Factions is a quite game mode now, but it’s possible to bring it back. Even if the community isn’t HUGE, a small happy profitable one would work for me. I even have some leftover assets I’ve made that I never used.

Looking for honest feedback and opinions.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

I never really played factions, but I've been actively doing servers and have seen quite a lot of discussions about them on various discord servers.
From what I've heard Factions is pretty much dead. There seem to be servers such as Minecadia (and maybe Viper which is having a comeback I think) that still have success with factions, but these servers have tons of features and an insane amount of well known creators. Not to mention that Minecadia was created by the Owner(s?) of another big faction server (which, tbh I forgot the name of), meaning that they've probably had an easier start than other servers.

But if you are passionate about it, willing to spend money even if you won't make profits or may even lose money even on the long run, then go for it I guess

The factions gamemode as you know it, is dead. There are so many new and fresh PvP Based game modes that factions is almost non-existent in todays minecraft community. Even some of the larger servers are phasing out factions in favor of new gamemodes, Like lifesteal and cPVP. But as you said, It could possibly be revived.

Here is my thought process.

I can get it started for cheap. I have a lot of unused assets of mine, I can do a lot of the stuff myself. I could release this in full force next week very easily if I wanted. Without spending much, maybe $100?

It wouldn’t be long term, it would be to promote it to new players but also bring back the nostalgia. I don’t care if it’s not a huge server and even if it dies after a few months, yes I’d like to break even, yes I’d like some profits so it’s not a waste of time, but it’s also a passion to me.

My main concern, 1.8.9 is old, but newer versions don’t work well with factions.

Let me know what you guys think.

Hey, sorry forgot to respond yesterday.

I mean if you think it's possible for you to get things going with $100 and you have some extra money saved up just in case extra costs come up, I'd say go for it!
Can develop into something that makes you good amount of money and might even bring you joy :)

In my opinion, for that price with that little effort to get a good (I assume) factions server running, why not give it a shot? Sounds fun to me honestly.

If you're considering starting a Java multiplayer server, it's important to be aware of the current landscape. This space has long been crowded, and lately, many players and server owners have been feeling the effects of Mojang's shift in focus toward Bedrock. With a focus on crossplay and microtransactions, it's no surprise that Java multiplayer is experiencing a decline. Even well-regarded servers like MCC are finding it tough to gain traction. But don't let this discourage you!

Minecraft is the kind of game that's got staying power. It's amazing how it's managed to keep things fresh and interesting for such a long time, and it just keeps pulling in new players. I mean, let's face it, there aren't many games out there that can do that. And I'm pretty sure that it's going to keep doing that for a long time to come. I've heard that the Java version of the game is on its way out, but the bedrock servers are reaching new heights, with tens of thousands of players logging in every day.

As an ex owner of a faction server that ran for 2+ years, here's some things to consider:
1. Factions is a competitive and toxic game mode. Be ready to deal with some of the scummiest players out there. This was something I hated dealing with. I run a survival server now and I honestly LOVE the players that game mode attracts
2. It can be pricey. If you have the assets already, then it shouldn't be too much of a big deal, but getting players is where prices go up. Faction youtubers are going to be in higher demand since no one plays, so be ready for those costs if you're trying to grow.
3. It's hard to pull off a faction server with 0 "p2w" features. A purely cosmetic based faction server isn't going to pull much profit. So if you're wanting to follow EULA, that's a pass, and be ready for many criticisms if you do have "p2w" features.
4. Factions is extremely rule heavy. You need to have a very strong staff team with well-defined rules. There are so many insane cannons that can just make walls go poof and you will get a LOT of hackers joining. Especially ghost clients. I used echo to help me catch hackers, but its still not full proof.
5. Most devs dont support nor care for 1.8.9 plugins now. Good luck fixing bugs from an old plugin. This one is really depressing knowing many plugins have great potential but most devs dont care to fix at this point.

Honestly, 1.8.9 gets further and further away. If you're really interested in doing something similar to factions, I'd look into Lifesteal, skyblock, or prisons as you can incorporate a lot of those traditional pvp elements into it. 1.20 is around the corner, and it just makes 1.8.9 become further and less attractive. It's possible you could have something decent, and it could work out since factions is near non-existent. There isn't too much competition anymore. But overall, I personally don't think it's worth the time / effort. Good luck tho!

or put time & effort into making a modern factions experience that utilises changes in combat, etc rather than seeing it as a disadvantage for tryhard players lol
