There is so much more you can do with minecraft in plugins and all that which just can't be done with Terraria which is why I like it more.

Terraria servers are comparatively smaller, but there are some very nice and structured servers that you can play on Terraria. With Terraria, there's generally a limit to the amount of players you can have because of the limited world size & number of things you can do together. Oh - worth noting that playing multiplayer in a party of 2 or 3 is really really fun too.

I prefer Terraria for its amazing and extensive content. Minecraft is my go-to braindead game, though, but servers are fun there.

In terms of being a creativity toy, until Terraria becomes 3D it's Minecraft hands down. Building and exploration in 3D is much nicer. Terraria has nicer decoration options, but in a 2D environment it doesn't excite me very much. However as far as gameplay complexity, Terraria takes the cake there. Way, way more depth to the game. I'd love to have a 3D Terraria, that'd be great. For me the whole 2D thing just kills it.

They are both very good games in their own aspect so it really comes down to opinion on this one.
