I am aware that some of these might have been posted before, but I want to synthesize and make them sound better.
While it is a marketplace, we all like to have some fun from time to time. That brings me to the first category suggestion.
Community Challenges
1. Divide challenges into intervals. Have challenges for different services such as GFX, Building, etc., which will be hosted simultaneously and the winners will be posted in a stickied thread at the end of the interval. Grant the winners a badge, add another section under "Members" that lists all the members who have won challenges. This will give an opportunity for the smaller guys out there to get a name for themselves on MCM, and all participators with good submissions will get recognition, boosting the entire market. Let members suggest what the next competition will be, and select some skilled judges (e.g.: for a terraforming competition, GuildsMC and Ivain could be judges if they wanted). Judges could also receive a badge saying that they judged a contest.
Furthermore, challenges that require a server, like a building challenge, could a) give more traffic to the MCM server or b) give the option for hosting companies to sponsor the contests, giving them more recognition as well. It's a win-win.
Update #1
Thanks for your feedback Ivain. I think that the challenges could be operated mainly by the community and not staff members themselves. An alternate solution is selecting a crew of dedicated people to organize and schedule competitions.
Spice them up with different themes, and raise the stakes by giving some sort of incentive other than the badge, like cash or a mention in the newsletter...
Newsletter/Readers Digest
This could be several things or an amalgamation of all:
1. A simple line saying something along the lines of "Here's what happened when you were gone" or "A brief summary of..." and then a chronological collection of the hottest (most replied to) threads and posts of the week or month, which can be toggled to the MCM user's choice. Also, an additional feature is users being able to select what topics they would like to hear from. For example, if I only wanted to hear from the "Development," "Web Development" and "Graphics" sections then I would tick those boxes and I would receive the hottest posts/topics from those sections.
2. The Newsletter would open many doors. There could be a certain structure like the "Member of the Month (MotM). It will also make the "Announcements" section less general, and help MCM users navigate to find desired information more easily. For example, if you wanted to let the community know a staff member stepped down, this could be included in the "Important Events" section of the Newsletter. Either the staff team or a newly-delegated "Newsletter-Team" would be in charge of production, scheduling, etc.
Side Suggestion:
Also, if you can link your Steam and Twitter, you should be able to link your Skype as well.
