What do you think the most popular gamemode is for a server?

In my opinion, the classic survival experience has a lot of potential if the right features are added.

At the moment I believe the most popular gamemode (excluding minigames) would be Skyblock (due to the hype surrounding Hypixel's adaption of the gamemode).

But yeah, I totally agree with you that a spin on the classic survival experience could have huge potential, especially if you were to run regular server events, possibly event some automated ones, to keep players engaged. Maybe even introduce a formal economy plugin that uses emeralds as the baseline currency?
Yeah I really like the idea of using items as currency instead of the traditional coin/gold system.

I feel like there are too many pvp kind of servers out there. A nice PVE survival server (with a ton of custom features) would attract players with the occasional pvp events.

I totally agree with this.
Currently the most popular gamemode is skyblock and that would be how you would make the most money, but I believe any gamemode could be really popular with the right ideas, management and investment. If someone went and made a 1.12 factions server and there was a high payout the most popular would be factions. It really depends on how you want to go with it.
I also think a survival experience like towny could be quite a good idea.

I feel like minigames are the most popular, and have been for a while, the most successful and populated servers, going to the next level with that, I'd say the most popular minigames are eggwars (or a spin-off), skywars, and finally some form of combat, such as one in the quiver.

Practice seems to be a popular aspect of Minecraft right now. Lot's of people just simply like matchmaking.

Also one of the hardest gamemodes to pull off though. Big budget & large scale media coverage needed to make a practice server a success otherwise they'll die unbelievably fast.

Yeah great points you mentioned. I feel like with the proper development and management it can eventually get pulled off. The attraction though (media members) is defiantly a concern if you want to keep it alive.

Advertising is the hardest aspect of any server imo. You can have the best server out there with the most custom features but at the end of the day you need to get the word out.

Towny is making a small comeback, especially with servers like EarthMC who have a large community of people who basically roleplay global politics while building up their own towns and nations with the towny plugin. Many other servers have been leaping on EarthMC's success with their own spinoff's of the Minecraft Geopolitics concept.

Skyblock has also made a comeback, especially as of more recently. It seems like the gamemodes that are becoming the most popular are reworked versions of older games. A good example of this is HFC, Factions has historically become very popular, but HCF has taken this to another level. Although HFC is older and is now considered to be a dying gamemode by many of its players, it was originally created as an offspring of traditional Minecraft Factions but has gone down its own path.

Custom gamemodes are a hit or miss with players. MCBR was a short-lived recreation of the Battle Royale genre that was then recently popularized by Fortnite's success. After a lot of marketing and promotion from its creators, the server was never fully lifted off the ground despite the original concept having huge potential. The execution wasn't the greatest, as the server was almost trying to copy Fortnite feature-by-feature which didn't translate very well in a Minecraft setting.
