You could benefit from studying up on color theory and lighting, though.
For example, a purple asteroid would have deep red or deep blue shadows and the light point would be yellow / orange-ish if close to the sun and light blue-ish if close to a moon / planet / start or other spacey object that reflects / gives off light.
