Today I was about to register a domain name with Namecheap but it said the domain was unavailable. When I searched for the domain in the WHOIS records, I found out that it wasn't registered yet so I assumed it was in the grace period or something. I decided to contact their support team via live chat to ask why I couldn't register it and the representative said that .xyz registration has been discounted. I also got a confirmation via Twitter. None of them are able to give me a reason on why they removed .xyz registration.

Was this change announced or did they quietly removed .xyz registeration. Do you guys know why this is? I'm just kind of confused on why that would remove .xyz registration.

Maybe now all the threads trying to sell worthless $0.88 domains will stop.

use http://name.com

so much better than name cheap

$10.99 for a .xyz though. I can get .com's or .net's cheaper than that.

Their design is much easier to work with, and if your a new client just use an affiliate code and you'll get $5 off
To be honest, when buying a domain. I don't really bother about how well its laid out, or how nice their site looks. I use cloudflare for managing all my domains. Far easier then trying to remember which domain is with who. Ill likely only use it once a year to renew the domain.

Even with $5 off, that's still $6 for a .xyz which most people that buy them, either have very little money to get a better domain, or like me find some random and likely pointless thing they need a domain for, and $0.88 is fine to waste on one. But $6 isn't really.

Might be, I cant see them making a great deal on them tbh. They sell them cheap, hoping people will renew them after a year, so they start to make something from them and I cant see very many doing so. But they might be back. I for one hope that they are.

That or they realized they weren't making enough profit from the TLD.

I chatted with a NameCheap support rep and they said they do not have any details on the situation but apparently it was only stopped for the time being. They told me to watch https://blog.namecheap.com/ for any announcements.

I checked on their blog earlier hoping that there was a post on it.

To be honest, I think they over-populated .xyz so the XYZ registry said they couldn't sell XYZ domains. They sold them at such a cheap price.
