When I was a kid, I went on holiday in Switzerland. My sister and I were playing in the snow, making snow slides etc down the hill of the mountain village where we were staying.
After a bit, we decided to explore further downhill.
After trampling through a bit of forest, suddenly the ground stopped. I managed to grab on to a tree, and my sister was fortunately behind me, but what we'd encountered was an 80m sheer cliff down to an ice lake. No fences or warning signs or anything.
Considering there was about half a meter of loose snow (and neither of us was taller than 1.50 m ourselves), we nearly slid down anyway. Without those trees there to hold on to, we probably would have fallen and died. Or perhaps, if we were VERY lucky, we would've landed in a snowdrift and merely broken most of our bones.

Someone ice-skated over my hand and I was losing blood so rapidly I passed out and had to have some transfusions or I'd die of blood loss.
