Need Advice: What are the best gamemodes to start a server?

Hello, MCM!

I've been making servers on and off since late 2015. I wanted to make one again. The problem is, I'm a nostalgic guy. I really want to do a kitpvp and factions network (with events for kitpvp and whatnot), but I know the pvp community is pretty much gone. I'd like to make a network with 3 gamemodes. What are the gamemodes that keep players on, as well as make profit if done well?

Also: can I make a kitpvp + factions server in 2023?

Factions and KitPvP is definitely not a good starter. All popular servers with those gamemodes are established OLD networks that existed for years now
The closest you can get to Factions is SMP. There are quite a few different versions of SMP so you can pick and choose, Or make a unique twist your own

Because they are overdone, Old and no longer unique. Majority of players active on Java aren't from old times like you. So the experience you want to offer may be nostalgic but that isn't enough to get players to enjoy it

What do you mean? We mainly use Factions for forming teams, and also they can claim, but the server itself is just survival/smp. I don't know if that classifies as a SMP server or not.

It really depends on your budget. smp is generally "cheap" to start with and makes a good amount of money
On a larger budget you'd ideally do minigames or a completely custom survival experience with a texture pack

Gotcha. I'm sad to hear this because it seems every gamemode I'd like to make or have fun making wouldn't work in today's game. Bums me out honestly. What about prison? I'd like to do a SMP I suppose. I just wish I can do factions/kitpvp/prison because those would be fun for me to make.

Prisons still works if you make it more modern. All the popular new prison servers i know use texturepacks to innovate so it is possible. Though i assume it's more expensive to start with

Skyblock or Prison servers were good starters, they've always worked for me when I used to own years ago, not 100% sure if that's still credible though.

I'll definitely consider those two. Do you still own a server now?

I've been inspecting trends lately and i'd personally invest in prison right now - SMP/Skyblock would ofc work too but the competition is much greater than you'd get doing prison.

Would you suggest OP prison or normal prison?

You can create any type of server, as long as you work hard on it and focus very much on the marketing aspect of the project. I would not recommend creating a server that looks like every other server nowadays, with basic features and so on. Make something unique.

I have unique ideas. I'm super old school so my servers would be basic but fun. I'd definitely love to do factions, kitpvp, and prison. Maybe an SMP instead of prison, haven't decided yet. But how can I go about marketing it?

There's multiple ways you could market it. You can try having a chat with GPT, it gives some proper advice.

If you feel like you don't have the proper experience for marketing, you can always hire a professional & experienced marketing manager for your project who can propose effective ideas and you can brainstorm more together.

Right now, there is a plague of tapeworms servers that are based on the grind and leeching players off with selling crates that speed up the horribly slow progression.
Make a good server of this kind and you're set for having a lot of engaged players that will spend abundant amount of money.
Most commonly that will be a Prison or Skyblock (but only Hypixel has pulled it out with skyblock so far) and a good example of infinite prison server is CosmicPrisons.
But you can make an infinite server out of anything.
