Wow, long post - really useful! Where would I go and get all that from? (The cheaper option)
Just gotta poke around, for example, look at this one...

Link HERE to site.

You can get...

(Left is what's in the link ^ / Right is the one you posted a few posts back.)
i7 CPU @ 2.3Ghz (Turbo to 3.3) --------------- i7 CPU @ 2.9 (Turbo to 3.9) (Slower CPU, see tests HERE)
16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz --------------- 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz (Same here, no diff.)
No Hard Drive -------------- 480GB SSD + 1 TB HDD @ 5400 RPM (Yes you're out a Hard Drive, but it'll only cost ~$150 to get a nice SSD to pop in.)
17.3" 1080P (Anit-Glare) Monitor ---------------- 15.6" 1080P (Anti-Glare) Monitor (Same here, no diff.)
720p Webcam ------------- 2MP Webcam (1999 cell phone quality) If you care about webcam.
NVidia 825 Video card ----------------- NVidia 850 (See difference HERE)

Those are just a few examples, so what's changed? Well we got a little bit less powerful CPU, and a less powerful GPU, and no hard drive. And the price went from...

1,291 ----> 656

Now, I don't recommend this laptop because it does have a pretty weak GPU. But that's not enough to make up that %50 price cost!?
So lets add ~100 to makup for that GPU.

1,291 ----> 756

So what else, well we removed the Hard Drive, but those are cheap too! A 256GB SSD is only ~139! And you'll probably not use more than 256GB for your OS and programs. And regular Hard Drives are even cheaper! Let's add 200 more for hard drives.

1,291 ----> 956

What else? No OS? Let's be honest... we can torrent Windows all day long, or pretend to be a student on their site and get a huge discount.
Let's add ~30 for OS (If you decide to throw more money at one the the wealthiest companies in the US and have it be legal).

1,291 ----> 986

Fuck it let's just round it up to 1,000. Maybe buy some food on the way home from the store.

1,291 ----> 1,000

So as easy as that, we've cut out £300.

So like I said, don't necessarily go with that laptop, I don't think it will perfectly meet your needs, but with some research, and a little bit of work on your end, you could end up saving yourself a good chunk of change.

B&H is a reliable site, I buy all my camera equipment and stage equipment from them.
I'm sure it's reliable, I just didn't know if the pricing was 100% as cheap as it gets for those particular specs but either way that laptop is very nice IMO.

Yeah I agree that's definitely a better bang for OP's buck!

Asus = Amazing brand
4 USB 3.0 = Future proofing +1
AC Wireless = Future proofing +1
Backlit Keyboard = Fucking best thing ever +1
17.3" Screen = Bigger than 15.6", still 1080p +1
GTX 970M = Awesome video card! +1

Only comes with a 1TB hard drive, but at least it's 7200RPM and not 5400.
Could easily swap that out for a 1TB SSD in a year for ~200$

Nice find! I'd recommend this as well after looking at the specs.

Dang, I do really like that! Is the processor/GFX/Video card better?

Fancy stuff, and they put it into English! The only thing I have to complain about http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...oCeS6z7mmmbkJYWBkaAkP08P8HAQ&is=REG&A=details is that it doesn't support blue-ray, but i assume you can replace that DVD drive? Also, that chunky bit at the back is kind of disturbing, looks fine when its closed but its a bit ugly when its open D:
1. What do you use Blu-Ray for?
2. You could always buy an external USB 3.0 Blu-Ray player.
3. It does look kinda dorky, but you're getting into the area of sacrificing sleek looks, for sheer power.
That bad boy has such a fat ass for it's heat sinks, gotta keep a monster like that cool, it's gonna be hungry for air.

1: Movies
2: Fair enough
3: Haha fair do's, I'm just used to Macbook's and their clean/sleek look.

Also, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...4710hq_2_5g_16gb_1tb_256_windows8_1_17_3.html is $300 more than http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...oCeS6z7mmmbkJYWBkaAkP08P8HAQ&is=REG&A=details, and the only difference I could find is that the first one has a 240GB SSD - is it worth the extra $300?

Not worth, the drive you could get for half that price. Install it yourself, format it, restart the computer, boom there's your drive.

I do like the look of my MBP too don't get me wrong, Apple makes some sexy stuff, however my MBP will also melt it's own keyboard if I let some games run long enough.

I could understand wanting a Blu-Ray drive for movies, but for that I'd just say torrent those as well.
I use MPC-HC to watch Blu-Ray if needed.

With my 200kb download speed if I'm lucky? Sure, torrenting sounds great aha. I like to just pop in a movie, HD quality, get a bag of crisps and just be done. No need to load up a movie prehand, spend hours searching for it, downloading etc.

Fair enough, totally don't blame ya then.

I think you have the knowledge now to make a good choice though, you can never do enough research! Research will be your best tool!
Once you find what you think is the one, go for it bro! Enjoy your future power-house of a laptop ;D

Check out some MSI laptops, a bit pricey, but great performance.
