Need someone to explain Factions

I haven't owned/played a faction server since 2014. I understand that the game mode has changed drastically. As I am planning on making my own faction server. Therefore, I'd like to have a complete understanding how today's faction servers function and what are the essentials.

Well mainly majority of factions servers are using crystal pvp method and raiding stayed the same pretty much cannon raiding/creeper/tnt/epearl glitches

What's the crystal pvp method? I tried to look around to see what it is but from what I found it seems that the crystals are used for raiding. Is there more to it?

Its basically use an respawn anchor and end crystal to pretty much nuke people

Oh I see. Is there any sort of "expected" aid from the server side for base construction? Like having some special plugin?

Now as to kits and armor and weapons. When I played faction back in the day you'd start with leather or iron armor and then there was OP faction servers that'd start you with diamond. Has that changed? As in do all servers start you with diamond armor?
