New server have questions

I'm almost done setting up my factions server and I have been out of touch for a little while and have a question.

If my server is being rented and not on a dedi what do I need to do in terms of server protection, and smooth operating.

Stuff like LiteBans, and ViaVersion and just general things like DDOS protection or databases. Basically what do I need to be able to run my server smoothly in 2017.

I'm pretty sure the hosting company already has DDOS protection, the only thing I can think of is if you were to be DDOS'd you won't be able to do much about it.

Which company have you rented your MC hosting from? Some companies have better protection than others.
