I'm looking for some recommendations for a new phone because mine will die one of these days.

My budget would be somewhere around $400-500 if there's anything decent for that price.

OnePlus 6T and above. Do a little bit of research and see which is the best type thats suitable for you.
Overall Oneplus gives the best value for your buck.

Iphone SE is not a bad choice either, it has its brand value and better resale value but the phone is little too small. Its like an iphone 6 with upgraded features.

OnePlus Nord is a phone that's just come out and matches your budget. I would look into that.

To actually contribute to the topic,
In my opinion, if he's happy with the phone you recommended then thats what he should stick to. Since most phones he's gonna be picking from, are gonna have the same specs (give or take, since it could vary quite a bit). It all comes down to what he uses his phone to, since if he rather try an iphone, sure for the price range in mind you may or may not get some worse performance(havent checked personally so couldn't say). However for most users, some minor improvements or changes most likely won't affect you. So really, unless he has some specific need, he should pick the phone hes most comfortable, regardless if its an iphone or android.
