Hi guys, Im thinking of buying a new minecraft server when i came across OMGServ. Apparently its "Unlimited Plan" Lets you choose an amount from 1-100GB for very cheap prices. To me it seems like a scam however heres some images of what my friends servers look like:

Looking at the screenshot above there is only 495MB that's actually allocated. Personally I wouldn't trust any provider that offers unlimited something. There is always a limit or some catch. I highly doubt their hardware could cope with a heavy workload at those prices. Having a server with 16GB RAM is one thing, but a CPU that can manage to run a server full of players is another.

I used to have 1 of my servers on Verygames, which also provides "Unlimited RAM". It was changing, more players I got, more RAM they allocated (still I was limited to 8gb). #JustAnExperienceIHad

Usually, I can't put my input to things as I'm a host. However, I think you're missing a good 15GB to be allocated...

Also they resell OVH just been looking at their "VPS Game hosting" packages:

Same CPU, overclocked to the same speed, using the same RAM, and the same amount of DDoS protection. Too much of a coincidence for it not to be. Same story with their other VPS's.

O and look:

Advertising a VPS with 512GB HDD storage, that's also an SSD. Must have missed the release of the HDD, SSD hybrid. Cant really be both, so they cant have checked their site for errors.

You can use all the maximum ram, them like many other hosts add like 250mb's more to your server whilst it's running that it needs.
Therefore, if you need 10 gb (which you will never likely need) it will allocate like 10256mb of ram for example.

Them and many hosts do this because it allocates less ram, so they could sell 80Gb's worth of ram and only use 30.
That's all good companies doing that, but then comes the summer holidays and a sudden surge of players join the servers, and the node runs out of RAM and the server crashes during a save and corrupts the world save. (Might have been a bit over dramatic there, but its still a possibility) Might work for some, but personally I wouldn't feel too comfortable using a host that does that.

Asides if someone has enough players to need 10GB RAM, then they should have more than enough money from donations to get a cheap dedi or a good quality shared host.

I have used and know people who have used OMGServ before. To be honest it's not bad but it certainly is not the best. The way they offer the unlimited ram (at least last time I checked) was that they give you 10gb to start off with. If your server needs more they will give you more. The idea behind offering the "unlimited" ram is they assume people will barely use what is allocated. Meaning they assume people will only use maybe 4gb of the 10gb.

So how does this effect performance? Well my guess is that there is some overselling (I might be wrong). If they assume only 4gb will be used then they probably sell it more than they should to maximize profits. That being said they might monitor the servers really well as they do use a custom panel, however I can't say for sure.

Note: If I am wrong in saying this please let me know so I can correct it.

I've used OMGSERV before, I can't say it was the best experience.

Even though I only used them for a VPS, the support was horrible. My VPS was down for days and when contacting support they had no idea why, after 3 days they finally got it back up. As for the VPS itself, the speeds were super slow and the performance was far from great. (Like Hoot said, most likely overselling a bunch).

This was probably only a few weeks after they started offering VPS', so it was a while back.

Another thing is as far as I'm aware (I may be wrong), they use cracked software/licenses for TeamSpeak hosting. They offer 10 slots for something like €0.99 which wouldn't cover the cost, and they aren't listed on the official list of AHTP for TeamSpeak.

Just for your information, when you get accepted as a ATHP for Teamspeak, you won't get listed there unless you request to, there are certain requirements.

More ram you need (like if the amount of free ram is very low, like 256mb or 512mb) the will change the amount of ram you need. I used them for my old network for the unlimited, then I switched to there vps's for better hardware. We are currently using there 32gb ssd plan for ZyrexMc (servers old playerbase was 110 like 4 months ago and it was lag free!)

Recurring? o.0
No.

the node runs out of RAM
I don't think they are that stupid.

I've just looked into the company a little bit and I would trust them. They have a custom control panel which is a huge plus. They probably have the necessary scaling and monitoring to be able to provide this unlimited hosting.

So what ur saying is its fake?
The amount of RAM you see is real and can be used.

Are they overselling? Probably. Is it bad? I wouldn't say so. It's a good business model and looking at their size and social media following, I'd say it's working out for them.

I know hosthorde also does the same thing. However, you can't just say "Give me 2321gb ram plz". Your player count needs to make sense. E.g it doesn't make sense to have a 20gb ram server for 10 players. I assume same applies to OMGServ. I might consider them for MCM's server.
