Hello MC-Market,
I was curious what you thought would be the perfect base version to build a server off of?
The reason I am asking is because I am currently developing a skyblock and prison server. For the servers we planned on using Hyperion as it has great performance for our old servers (factions). This being said the jar is made for factions. Are there any "newer" jars? I think the only thing preventing myself from switching to a different version besides 1.8 is making sure that the 1.12 will perform just as good.

Should we build the servers for a newer version like 1.12 and not 1.8 (Hyperion)? If so what jars do you recommend? Thank you all for your time.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

It really all depends on the gamemode, if you're running servers it should be known that the performance on all versions greater than 1.12.2 have quite considerable drop off. Server versions running from 1.13+ are much harder to optimise and keep stable just due to the nature of the version, where as 1.8 - 1.12.2 have always been super easy to keep stable. You can make way more "errors" and get away with it where as you need almost a pitch perfect setup for higher versions.

In answer to your question, yes, 1.12.2 is a stable version and pretty decent to build Skyblock.

In regards to recommendations, if you're building prison I honestly see no reason to use anything other than 1.8. The only reason to increase versions might be because of the new blocks and that's not even that helpful. So therefore I would recommend using a 1.8 base version. In regards to Skyblock there are multiple different avenues you can go down, personally I think it's cool to see 1.16.5, now moving into 1.17 version of the gamemode as it's more unique and fresh, however running on a 1.12.2 version is more stable and can still provide a much better experience. If you're looking to run a hard competitive server then again 1.8 is always a solid option. Usually if people are just grinding cane or darkzone they don't need all the new features, mobs or blocks of the higher versions and therefore loose a drastic amount of value from changing the version at all. So I would recommend using 1.8 for a hard competitive server however if you're going down the casual route, 1.12.2, 1.16.5 or 1.17 are all viable options.

Most larger servers, for example ManaCube have dropped support for versions such as 1.13, 1.14, 1.15
(They're just bad versions an to be honest, most people don't use them. I will attach a player graph to help visualise this.)
