Opinions/Ideas on Minecraft Server Owning

So, I wanted to post this because I want to hear other peoples thoughts, opinions and ideas on server owning.

I mainly want to hear what you need to open up a succesful server and how you can manage a large playerbase correctly.

My main idea is just to take care of your playerbase as diamonds, I also think you don't need to have a whole bank for you actually to have a succesful server just need a host, domain and you're done. Well, anyways that's what I think.
