I want to get everyone’s opinions on the recent gun matches. Because personally I find it very funny and have a few points I’d like to make.

  • More people die a year on the toilett than by guns
  • AR-15 is not a military grade weapon
  • Knives kill more people than assault rifles
  • Guns don’t kill people. If I leave a gun on a table it won’t shoot until someone pulls a trigger
  • ^ don’t agree with my point above if my car sits in my driveway I can’t get into a wreck and kill people.
  • Bump Stocks: Yeah try and get rid of these... they are easily made with a board and 3 nails
  • What happens if we get rid of guns? Was there weed before states legalized it? Is there illegal drugs currently? Yes and Yes. Imagine having no guns and lunatics being able to buy them legally. They could inflict much more harm.
  • Last point 374 people die a year from Assault Rifles, Guns in total 13k and 67k people die from OD (In 2016). So why are we fighting to get rid of Guns and Assault rifles.

My opinion is this

Guns don't kill people. Stupid motherfuckers with guns kill people.

If someone wants a gun - they'll get one. It doesn't matter if they're banned or not. They'll get one. Murder is a crime in the first place. So you think someone that wants a gun to murder someone or shoot up a school won't just because the gun store closed? Sadly it's part of life. ( I'm talking about the US on the next one ) there 325 million people in the US - and what 5-10 mass shootings / year? Quite frankly that's an extremely small percentage. ( not including murders, but quite frankly the media doesn't seem to care that much about individual murders with guns )

You want to know why politicians are having a big issue with this? Same reason as why they raise the minimum wage ( gonna sidetrack a bit here ) - I live in CA , and the minimum wage here is being raised all the time. But you want to know why that doesn't change anything? Because when you increase minimum wage you increase inflation. You may raise the minimum wage, but then all the prices for stuff go up because companies have larger expenses. So nothing was accomplished. But then what happens? The politicians talk and say " look at everything I accomplished! " We raised minimum wage by 20%, and while in reality that changed nothing, it causes increased support for them from the people. Same deal with guns.

They end up accomplishing nothing in the long run - but they want to make guns harder to get from say gun stores, because it causes increased support for them , and they can move up in political standing since it increases their support from the people.

Men do kill people, sames as Women kill people. Guns are fine. The people behind them are the reason killings and shootings happen.

Do all men kill people - No
Do most men kill people - No
Are the majority of violent crimes committed by men? - Sorry but yes

IMO, in Canada we don't have guns whatsoever except for hunting. No one dies by guns, period. Stabbings and other things are much more common, but in general our crime rate is much much lower. I see guns as a tool to mass-kill people. If someone tries to kill a ton of people through stabbings, someone is gonna stop them making it much less effective.

Americans who support guns are not very bright, my example above is literally what happens when you take guns out of society. Whens the last time you've seen a school shooting in Canada? Never.
You see the problem with this ^ , and what many other people have stated is that sure no guns in america = no killings by guns. But the real kicker here is how the hell are you going to get rid of all the guns in america? As of right now, there are ~ 300million guns in america. How the hell do you plan to get rid of all of those? Because trust me, asking the people that own guns to hand them in won't even get rid of ( imo ) half of them.

I personally support the NRA - but either way - it's too late america. It doesn't matter how badly the US wants to get rid of the guns in it, with the amount there are , you never will.

I'm in my second year of Psychology in University, and anyone can tell that obviously your mindset is extremely closed minded. I'll tell you these two phrases, that can quash your argument instantly.

"The ends don't justify the means."
"Correlation does not imply causation."

Please, try to be more open-minded on matters like this. For example, how did we take all the swords, muskets, etc. out of Europe and Canada?
Australia had a shit ton of guns, they had a government sponsored buy back of all guns under a certain category. Similar could be done?

I am pretty open minded - but I personally don't think this is the right way to go about this. I believe that the only thing that politicians in the US are doing is getting more support without actually accomplishing much. You don't go about removing 300 million of anything that many people strongly support, in one swift move. In order to get rid of guns in america it would have to be a 10 or so year effort , slowly easing america into it. But think about drugs - it's something the us has tried to get rid of for a long time, and it's something pretty much everyone is united on - drugs should be illegal. Yet even with tons of effort & money they still remain. I personally support tighter gun control , if you've been convicted of a violent felony , then you shouldn't be allowed to purchase a gun. If you've been at mental facilities, same thing. But similarly as with drugs, you may try as hard as you can to stomp them out, but you won't be able to.[DOUBLEPOST=1522448677][/DOUBLEPOST]

And this is an extremely good point. With 300 million guns, lets do a ( more than fair ) estimate of 200 million legally documented & owned guns. The people that own guns won't just go " here take it " , at a minimum you would need to buy them back as some other countries have done. Say you paid $100 for every gun, at 200 million legal guns to be purchased, that's 20 billion. Something the US could probably afford if they really wanted to. But $100 is extremely low. An actual decent gun that the average american would own is $250+ ( for a hand gun ) , and even more for other types of guns. Accounting for accessories & fancier guns I think an estimate of at least 300 ( more like 400 ) dollars for every gun would have to be reasonable in order for the population to willingly give them up. The price to purchase just 2/3 of the guns ( who knows how many such a program would actually result in being turned in ) would cost the US 70-200 billion. Good luck getting that fitted into the budget ( doable but extremely unlikely )

Not even just that, how would they locate them all.

Interesting topic. Here in the UK (probably mostly where I live) schools tell us a lot about guns in the USA and "how bad they are". Although a gun has a potential to do a lot of harm, it's about the person using it. Kitchen knives have the potential to do a lot of harm. Even some chemicals used in school labs do...

Then again, we do have a lot less gun crime here, and the same goes for Canada and many other countries.

But similarly as with drugs, you may try as hard as you can to stomp them out, but you won't be able to.

That's a good point. We all know the war on drugs is an absolute mess. But in the Netherlands the government introduced a policy where drugs were allowed but discouraged, and with safe, clean drugs provided and special centres with medical facilities & more designed to ease people off drugs, the system has worked amazingly. Perhaps a system with a similar basis should be implemented with guns, like the UK; Where guns are legal but a licence is needed and it's logged. That way everyone has their rights, but the government can check past records and keep a tab on owners. After all, you are right; We can't abolish guns completely, it would be almost impossible, alike with drugs.

It's an interesting debate, but whatever side you fall on, I think we can all respect that at the moment, guns are seen as a symbol of freedom and defence of each individual by supporters.
