Stereotype Word Explanation
A stereotype is commonly known as a phrase or characteristic toward a certain group of individuals, which in most cases are toward an ethnicity or race. One of the most common misconceptions of stereotypes is that some mistake it for prejudice, as they are both based on assumptions. Every race has a stereotype, this includes Mexicans, Jews, African Americans, and other races. Stereotypes are not limited to just ethnicity, though, there exists many stereotypes including gender, and sexual orientation. In Shankar Vendantam’s,” How a Self-Fulfilling Stereotype Can Drag Performance”, explains how stereotypes can negatively affect people using real life situations and examples. We use this article as a reference, to better understand stereotypes and how it affects us in our communities. We have been given a project to discuss the various stereotypes that surround our community around the school, and how they affect people and their self esteem. We first interviewed a portion of our friends to establish an understanding on which stereotypes exist in our community, what they believe about the stereotype, (In better detail, do they believe its true or not), and how it affect them.
For our stereotype project, we decided to create a blog, which is where documented our results on. We interviewed several people and ended up with various stereotypes which surround our school , which most, if not all were harmful to our school community . We created the blog using the recommended blog tool, blogger, considering no matter which device we view and edit on, our work will always be able to be accessed to. Other projects seemed more difficult to work with, due to the timescale we had to work with, and us being separated, we couldn't be able to work on it at the same time. In blogger, we have the ability to add as much detail as we desire in an easy way, yet still maintaining an easy, flexible workspace, as both of us are able to edit our blog at the same time. Furthermore to our choosing, a blog offers many more features than any other of the available projects, thanks to it being on the web. Me and my partner chose this in order for our classmates to interact with the website with their own laptops or any other of their electronic devices.
