Hi guys,

So I have a rather complicated choice to make and I would like to have the opinion of someone a little more experienced than me!

I just signed a collaboration with a French Minecraft YouTuber, he has over 30k subscribers so I would like to provide a quality service knowing I can afford it. I'm going to need several servers quickly to meet the needs of my customers.

I have the choice to use a third party service that has its own servers in a data center in Nanterre, France or to use a more traditional service, ie OVHcloud.
Also want you to take into account that a server can have between 25 and 40 servers depending on the type of server chosen by the client.

Here are the configurations at my disposal ;

So for the service tier in Nanterre :
  • Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 (8C/16T @ 2,60 GHz)
  • 64 GB DDR3 ECC
  • 2 x 500 GB SSD
  • Bandwidth 1GBPS (besteffort)

    Price : 72€

And OVH (Rise Game)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X - (6C/12T- 3,8 GHz )
  • 64 GB DDR4 ECC
  • 2 x 500 SSD NVMe
  • Bandwidth 500Mbps

    Price : 80€

I look forward to your response,
    Anthony LF

OVH are kind of assholes but "OVH (rise game)" would demolish Nanterre performance wise

OVH, regardless of the bandwidth, your server won't even hold more than a few hundred people on a single server (especially depending on the server version).

You are talking about the number of possible servers to create on the server or the number of people connected simultaneously?

On a single server under the best conditions. If you're actually worried about bandwidth, then look at a Game server, they provide 1 Gbps of bandwidth with better CPUs.

Both of those aren't going to get 25-40 servers (unless they are 1-2 gigs each, which won't be nearly enough). So your going to want to get 128 gigs on whatever server you choose (with 8 cores minimum) and then you might be able to hit the 25-40, but I wouldn't count on it. As far as the amount of people per server, it really depends on the amount of plugins and version, but for older versions (1.12 and below I believe) 8-10 players per gig is resasonable without plugins, and probably 4-6 (don't know the exacts as I haven't really done testing for newer versions) if its a higher version. So as others have mentioned here, bandwidth is not going to be your limiting factor, but rather the actual server itself. As far as who I would recommend for EU, I would go with https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver and possibly have some third party source do your ddos protection.

Do you think there is a way to talk on discord in order to develop a little more?
