Hey this is just a Pointer to ALL server owners who want to go to a dedicated server. DON'T GO TO OVH. I was awoken 8 am with an email saying my server had a fault and that they were fixing it. Well they did! They Deleted everything! Absolutely everything right down to every single configuration file! Every website file

Hey have a look at my dedicated folder

So this is just a pointer to never think these big company's will have your back there just hungry bastards. Apologize for the language

Do you not take backups?

I've used OVH for awhile now and I've never had an issue with them.

Plus... If they wiped your dedicated server there was probably a hard drive failure that couldn't be fixed so they just smacked a new HDD in there (they wouldn't just wipe your dedicated server for no reason).

It's their job to keep your dedicated server online and it's your job to keep your files safe (cough cough... backup files to a different server every X days).

OVH's ToS:
7.3 The Customer alone shall bear the consequences of a server malfunction.
7.6 The Customer shall take all required measures to ensure the backup of his/its data.

So what I'm trying to say is... Please don't shit talk companies and their staff for doing their job.
#JustSayin'

Still did they even bother to tell the customer or just ditched the server completely since it easier to "replace" it than say replace the motherboard or CPU?

Once a drive has failed yea it no more than a paperweight but unless he was TOLD this I could only assume that they did it for their own convenience stakes.

If its not Hard drive failure, then it should just be a matter of taking the drive out, and installing it in a new server. How long have you had the server?

Exactly why I am puzzled on why they just went "okay here your new server go crazy with it". If he was never told that the drive was at fault.

Never had an issue. On top of that, backups are a must for any customer concerned about losing data. Not entirely their fault, especially if it was an un-fixable problem.

I will go ahead and pipe in on this conversation. When I used to help run a small group where all we did was fuck around with linux, we had multiple failures (our fault) but never a failure like this. As multiple people have said you need to keep backups and you can't possibly blame a host for a failure that is not in their control. They basically did what they had to do in this situation.

OVH offers 500GB free backup storage with every server, OP should have used that.
If you want a reliable backup, then you shouldnt use the same host for your backup too. If they can lose all the OP's files, then i dont think they would have much problem, loosing a backup too.

Diffrent host and daa center. Then have the VPS pull the data off the dedi. Not the other way around, so that if the dedi does get hacked, there are no scripts that have access to it. I think time4vps are also using RAID6. So even if your dedi and VPS storage fail, you still have your data. On 2 other HDD's

I agree about not using the same host. But if you're on a budget there's nothing wrong with using the backup storage provided as a way to help redundancy if you have nothing else. Pretty sure all the OVH servers are also equipped with a least 2 drives, so not sure if OP didn't setup RAID or if both drives died? If you'd like OP you can contact OVH to post you the dead drive(s) if you need to try and recover data, you may not be able to though.
