We are running a high-traffic Survival/Kingdoms server averaging 150-250 concurrent players. We are currently hosted on a AMD EPYC 4564P with 28GB RAM running Purpur 1.20.1.
Despite having top-tier hardware, we have hit the hard limits of the single-threaded Minecraft engine.
Responsibilities:
Despite having top-tier hardware, we have hit the hard limits of the single-threaded Minecraft engine.
- Entities: We actively manage ~30,000 entities (Villagers/Animals/Mobs) during peak hours, and its growing.
- Performance: Even with aggressive optimization (DAB, Lobotomize, etc.), the main thread is constantly saturated by entity tick and chunk loading tasks, resulting in 5-10 TPS at peak.
- Hardware: Our CPU usage is technically low (~10-15% total), but the main thread is pinned at 100%. We have plenty of "wasted" cores that Purpur cannot access.
Responsibilities:
- Plugin Audit: Review our ~42 plugins (Citizens, Quests, BetterRTP, etc.) and identify which are incompatible with regionized threading.
- Replacement Sourcing: Find or configure Folia-supported alternatives for broken plugins (e.g., finding a Folia-compatible RTP or Claims system).
- Migration & Testing: Set up the test environment, migrate world data (ensuring no corruption), and stress-test the new environment.
- Config Tuning: Optimize Folia's threaded-regions and other specific configs for our player count.
- Lose or replace non-critical plugins.
- Deal with some "jank" in exchange for playable TPS.
- Adapt our gameplay features if necessary to fit the Folia architecture.
- Experience with Folia/Paper.
- Estimated timeline for a migration like this.
