Paid vs. Payed

I have spent a lot of time here on MCM and I have seen that people have been using payed more frequently than paid. Paid is the grammatical correct usage and what I always used. Once I joined MCM and I asked a friend if payed was the correct usage, he literally laughed at me. So... I understand everyone is taught differently and I have researched this. But I'm pretty sure you used paid and not payed.
