It really depends on what you will be using your build for. Will it be only for gaming or do you also want to use it as a workstation for certain intensive applications (like Premiere Pro or Blender etc.)?

If you only need it for gaming, an high clock i5 and 8GB RAM should be fine. Then just balance your budget according to how much storage you need (SSDs would be the best choice) and spend the rest on the graphics cards/peripherals.

If it's a workstation, i7 (multi-threading), 12-16GB RAM would be suitable. However you won't have much overhead budget for a graphics card and may have to stick with HDDs for your storage.

Mainly for gaming, not really anything else.

I saw the previous reply stating 8 GB ram should be sufficient. Even if it is just for gaming i would say a minimum of 16 if you want to play some really intensive games on high graphic.

I disagree. If you have more than enough RAM, it won’t affect the performance of the game at all. For about 90% (if not more) of games, having 8GB to 16GB makes practically an unnoticeable difference in performance. For general uses, the more RAM you have, the more programs you can run simultaneously. For professional use, it’s a bit different as many are RAM intensive programs.

A computer with more RAM feels noticeably faster, but only up to a point. 8GB is the sweet spot. You can choose 16GB if you want to be a bit ‘future-proof’, but sadly we aren’t working with a large enough budget to do that.

High-end 3D games rely on video RAM (VRAM), often expressed as “GDDR5” or similar. This is found in your graphics card and has more potential to affect your gameplay.

8GB in 2018??? Kappa

I wouldn't get anything less than 16GB. Also, have you considered going the ryzen route? I did and have no complaints

This data is accurate from the date 5th Feb 2018. Kappa

Video editing, encoding etc. That’s where you need RAM.

Oh and I did forget about Ryzen, I would say Ryzen would be a better choice to for your build. Possibly an R3 or R5.

I currently have 32GB DDR4, back when I had my old PC with 8, most games had a noticably worse performance. If you're on a budget, having 16gb should really still be a priority imho

It’s subjective :3 Mileage varies from person to person depending on how they use their computers. Those stats above were ran with only the basic windows processes running in the background. But it could have been very different if you are the type to have like, 50 internet browser tabs running in the background. The amount of background processes can change up how your PC performs. I would still say invest more into your graphics card than RAM to get more performance out. 16GB is a bit tight for that budget.

Unfortunately, regardless of how much you save, you're still not going to be able to afford anything better than a 1060 because all the 1070s are being grabbed up instantly by miners

Yeah, it would be better to wait a bit for the prices of GPUs to drop down and actually be in stock. Even the price of RAM and power supplies are also fairly high currently due to shortages too (don’t think these are related to mining however).

And in a couple of years 8GB is going to be the new 4GB, and just look at those numbers for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex .

So, if you are going to get 8GB, make sure you leave room to add additional RAM. For example, if your motherboard only has 2 memory slots (like in my mini ITX build), only get 1 stick so you can upgrade later (although I purchased a single 16GB, so I can upgrade to 32GB at some point).

Well it depends he could take the risk of buying a used for cheap or he could get a prebulit with new hardware which would still save him money.[DOUBLEPOST=1519891101][/DOUBLEPOST]

Ryzen is not as good in single core performance compared to intel but ryzen has better multi-core but currently in most games don't even take advantage of the multi core performance

I would highly avoid building a computer at this time, RAM and graphics card prices are through the roof. The closest thing would be to go to a dedicated system builder like OriginPC or CyberPowerPC.
