Why an iPhone 5s? For $400 you can get the iPhone SE..

Apple rips off.

Get a Cubot X17. The specs are orgasmic and it's several times cheaper.

If you're a user who has used Apple products and enjoyed them in the past. Buy a new IPhone. If you don't like the 6 or the 6s get the IPhone SE as it takes the design of the 5. If you're not a fan of Apple get an android.

My Microsoft Windows phone was $55, and I am actually starting to like it better than my old iPhone 5C. My 5C shattered on concrete, so I got a Windows phone. I dropped it twice on concrete, three times on it's side and once in water. It has yet to crack, shatter, or stop working. One of the best phones you can get for a very low price. All my applications run fine. I don't keep track of my storage usage, but I have thousands of memes from iFunny on my camera roll Kappa and my phone still runs smoothly. Would highly recommend. It's an AT&T GoPhone, so you need AT&T to have it as you'd pop in your SIM card to activate it.
IPhones are so unpredictable when it comes to dropping them. I dropped my old 5s about one thousand times and it never broke. I dropped my 6s off my lap on concrete and it shattered.

I got tired of Apple's shit after a while, that's why I don't use Macs. I am afraid to touch the screen and it'll break in half.

I dropped my 5C on concrete and it shattered, so I paid an Indian guy $104 to replace the screen, then I later shattered it again just a few weeks later, and then dropped it a third time and weird colorful lines showed up on the screen, and wherever the lines were I couldn't use that button. When my girlfriend wanted to have sexy time over text I had to use Siri to talk dirty. I swear I sent so much shit that wasn't correct. Eventually I got tired and bought a Windows phone. This is proof that Microsoft is better than Apple.
I had this old IMac back in 2013. The fan stopped working inside and the computer caught on fire. If I wasn't there it could have burned the whole house down.

Damn son.

I've never had overheating issues with Windows computers.
I'm not defending Mac, but I've smelled smoke on my old PC :p. Supposedly, the motherboard was fried?

Anyways, for a phone, I would wait a bit if I were you. $450 is a lot, but not enough for the flagships that just came out. If you wait a bit, they'll probably go down in price.

If you want an iPhone like you said above, the SE fits your price range (I've got no opinions towards iPhones :p)

Don't get anywhere near an iPhone.
Why?

All Apple ever does is make new phones that are slightly less worse and add a cool new feature (Siri, fingerprint, 3d touch bs, etc.).
If you take the iPhone 6s/ iPhone SE or any new iPhone and compare it to the latest android flagships you are bound to find better phones for less of a price.

How about for example we take the Oneplus 2, a phone that's very good (not that good tbh, lets hope Oneplus 3 rocks) vs the Apple iPhone 6s and compare them.

Price?
Oh please.
iPhone 6s = ~800$.
Oneplus 2 = ~350$. (Half the price.)
One point for the Oneplus 2!

Size? The Oneplus 2 is 5.5 inches and the 6s is 4.7. It doesn't matter tho :p

Screen resolution?
iPhone 6s = 750x1334 pixels
Oneplus 2 = 1080x1920 pixels (2k res, where your eye can still tell the difference unlike 4k on phones)
One point for the Oneplus 2!

RAM?
iPhone 6s = 2GB
Oneplus 2 = 4GB
One point for the Oneplus 2!

Camera?
6s = 12mp (No laser autofocus)
1+2 = 13mp (With laser autofocus, improves picture by a lot)
Impressive apple, but this round goes to the Oneplus 2

Proccessor?

Storage? Apple takes, but that's if you're buying the 128 GB model. Oneplus 2 has 64 GB built in (one of the 0.01% android phones without an sd card).

Operating system?
iOS, an intelligent operating system for stupid phone operators.
Sorry, but iOS is the biggest excuse for people for buying iPhones. Now I won't argue with them because honestly iOS looks great and has great UX.
What can you change in the operating system? Your apps, minor settings and background. That's it.

People say that "Android is too complicated" and I disagree. New Androids Lollipop & Marshmallow which both look great to start with and operate excellent.
Now it's incorrect to say "I have a hard time operating Android" because every Android phone can have it's own (android based) Operating system, it's own ROM, it's own Launcher, it's own Skin... You don't like the design you got with the phone? Change it! That's the beauty of android. Not only it's open source so it's packed with so many more features (take a look at the life-changing app Tasker), you can change anything about it.

If you really look into it, and decide that the excuse "oh well I'm used to iPhones now so I'll just spend my 100000$ to get what I'm used to" is pointless. Oneplus 2 wins.

Now I'm not telling you to buy Oneplus 2 because it's not that great of a phone (Oneplus 1 was better in my opinion). Stay away from iPhones.

We're left with iPhone 6s, the amazing phone that everyone wants with 1 point versus the average android phone, Oneplus 2, with 7 points.

The only success with 6s is Apple swimming in money.
