Prison Mine

I'll risk sounding like a noob by asking this but what is this "Prison mine" thing that everyone has been talking about lately? As a map maker it might be a fun project to work on at some point.

With that being said I have some questions about it:
What is the general idea behind prison mines?
Does it have any objectives?
What would a prison mine map consist of?

Sorry for not doing my homework on the subject but I haven't had much time to do any research lately and I figure this as good a place as any to learn more about it. :3

Go onto any prison server, then you'll know. it's basically a place for players to mine in. There would be a hole in the floor for them to mine in, plus an appealing outer area.
