However is it worth opening now when we could open when 1.9 is out and we already update? Opening right now to just update a day later doesn't sound very smart.

By now I meant ASAP. Plus why wait for 1.8? Not much changes (development-wise) just removed a bunch of deprecated classes and Player#getItemInHand is now deprecated. Everything else shouldn't matter in terms of updating.
